My Story

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thanks for your support.

    16 Oct 2024

New World Record (I believe). Nobody has done it ever!! Nobody would be silly to do it ever!! I just rode 25 kilometres today, easypeasy. The distance from my house to the end of the street where our letterboxes are is 720metres and today I rode my bike house to letterbox 18 times, avoiding and annoying our neighbors dog 36 times. This record will never be broken(unless I do it!!!). Thankyou all for all your donations as I keep on pedalling.By the way,why did the bicycle get thrown out of the convent? It was time to be quiet during the Vow of Silence, obviously "Spoke" too soon!!

  • Day 14
    14 Oct 2024

A large tree fell on our chook house last night, luckily avoiding their sleeping area but would have scared them ,took out one side of the coup so I spent 4-5 hours chainsawing and rebuilding the coup. I looked at my bike and thought,I might just do a couple of kilometres. I ended up doing 10km and I was fresh afterwards, must be starting to get fit. By the way,I went for a ride and every pub we past I went inside with my bike but the publican in every pub threw my bike outside and said,"your bikes not welcome here. After this happened several times,I said to my bike (my bike speaks to me,especially when I have had a few drinks!!) "why do you keep being thrown out of every pub you go into". My bike responded,"I can't Handle Bars" !!!!!!!

    13 Oct 2024

I only did 8 km this morning and was planning to go for another ride this afternoon. When I came back from this mornings ride I decided to rake up some leaves and branches that had been neglected for many months. 3 hours later and probably 10 cubic metres of debris later,I had overdone it and I would not have had enough energy to even put my helmet on !!!!!!!! By the way,I got up early so I could ride through the Fog,unfortunately I "mist" it !!!!!!!!!!

    10 Oct 2024

Needed a rest yesterday to recover from work and riding. Day off today, feeling good, decided to beat my 14km record for this challenge. Very happy with 20 kilometres today, feeling stronger every day . There is no way I could have done 20km at the start of this challenge, who knows where I will finish. By the way "I.ve really had it with my dog,he will chase anyone on a bicycle". "What are you going to do with him " someone asked "Sell him? Give him away to a dogs home? No,nothing drastic like that I said. I will just confiscate his bike !!!!!!!!

  • Day 7 ONE WEEK DOWN
    7 Oct 2024

Hi everybody, first week of the challenge and I have 55 kilometres down, happy since I have not ridden a bike for 12 months. Next week my target is to do 70 km or more. Thanks to all who have donated. My personal target for the month would be $500 if possible which will end up approx 50cents per kilometre. By the way, I asked GOD for a bike but I knew he did not work that way. So, I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness!!!!!!!!

    5 Oct 2024

Very wet day,had to work until 3pm then went to a local brewery with my friend Ben and we both had a pint of local Ale,it was very nice, came home and decided to go for a ride.Probably not a great idea straight after an ale but I managed to pump out 8 kiometres anyway. Tomorrows Sunday, maybe a sleep in then "hit the road". Why was the bicyclist a tee-totaller ?? Because he couldn't Handle Bars!!!

  • Day 4
    4 Oct 2024

Woke up a bit sore this morning but my teammate Aidan got me going and we both did 8km. When say 8km,where we live is on dirt roads with hills, not bitumen or bike paths. We have to avoid potholes, puddles and up and down quite steep roads. Going down is ok but uphill really tests you. Nice to go out on a bikeride with my son though. Thankyou for all your generous donations. For those who would like to donate, please keep in mind that $10 is awesome,it is the thought that counts. Whats it called when a bike rider gets mad about not riding enough kilometres, complains about car drivers not avoiding them and that their seat is so uncomfortable?? A vicious cycle!!

    3 Oct 2024

Beautiful day for a ride and after 10km ride today and total of 25km for the first 3 days I am proud of myself and.happy that my body is coping well with the step up in excercise. I have more energy and I am sleeping very well indeed. Tomorrow, depending on weather,I may ramp up my kilometres and try for a 15km ride!!! By the way! Why are bank tellers not allowed to ride a Bicycle???? They tend to lose their balance!!!!!!!!

    1 Oct 2024

Excited to challenge myself on how far I can cycle in October. 100km is only my first target to achieve. I want to blow that target out of the water soon. Today was a hard day at work. 10 hour shift-7am till 5pm but when I got home, rather than sitting on the couch,I jumped on the bike and smashed out my first 7km. Bit sore but I havent been on the bike this year. As the month progresses I will get stronger and go further.

“Thankyou Margaret, its a win-win for the kids cancer charity but also to keep me looking "sensational". I have only done this for 4 days and I am a bit worried that if I keep improving my impressive physique, I may have to find a way to keep the fans from approaching me wherever I go. Do you think I may be paranoid !!! NO!!! Once again thankyou for your donation. By the way, How did the barber win the bike race?? He took a shortcut!!!!”

“Much appreciated Ben,this is going towards a very worthy cause. All kids should be able to enjoy a healthy childhood like we have had. Now I must keep my end of the bargain and ride hard for the rest of the month. Aidan and I would like you to join next years challenge, maybe a few long rides along the bay. Thanks mate. By the way, there were 2 policemen on bikes when they saw a couple of teenagers putting grafitti on a bus shelter. They dropped their bikes and ran after them to catch them but they were too fast. When the police went back to their bikes they were amazed to find the wheels had been stripped back to just the rims. Both policemen are working "tirelessly" to catch the little buggers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

I am looking forward to all the initial pain that exercising can give but I know as the month goes on I will end up stronger. I will keep you informed with my progress and give you some tips, tricks and the occasional dad joke!! I will start the ball rolling.
