My Story

2 Oct 2024

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thanks for your support.

John

The winner of the Sunshine Coast GCC24 raffle is

    Elizabeth COLLIER (Orange B-14)

The prize package, generously donated by Ironman, Gympie included a 270° degree delta wing awning, a king-single swag, and the mandatory set of recovery boards - all needed items for "going off road".

A special thanks to Ironman, Gympie, and our appreciation to everyone who supported the raffle - it'll be back in 2025.

Stay safe, and we'll see you in 2025.

Just completed our final ride for GCC 2024 - a short burst along the Derwent River foreshore.

I knew, as we coasted (literally blown along), with a strong tail wind that the return trip to the car was going to be a battle - never a more accurate description.

It was a case if you weren't pedalling, you would get blown to an abrupt stop.

It was an experience when we were hit broadside - my grandson (Hayden) was forced to ride like a puppy on a lead (you know - the ones that lean right over). Lol!

To everyone that supported Team HJK, Hayden or myself this GCC - our heartfelt thanks and appreciation of your support.

We will be back in 2025 to continue to raise awareness and money for children fighting cancer.

    Stay safe.

    Thank you.

Tuesday saw the Team HJK manager, Hayden, achieve his km goal - a great effort.

This happened on the way IN to Hobart for a GCC morning tea that was arranged by his mother Tahnee and supported by his two aunts Jenni and Shani - a definite family effort.

My thanks to everyone involved and especially to those who attended the event and helped raise funds for the GCC.

After the event, it was time to head OUT of town and start using some of the calories, which we'd just eaten - a vicious little circle. Lol!

Hopefully, there will be some more rides over the next few days - weather pending.

    Stay safe.

With the kind support of the "Tasmanian Weather Gods," we managed our first GCC ride in and around the very scenic Brighton & Pontville areas.

Located a nice ride along the Jordan River Trail - oddly enough, we found the END before the START (did exactly the same thing in 2023 & had to do it twice. Lol!).

Thanks to everyone who has donated to this great cause - very appreciated. To those wishing to donate - follow the prompts, as provided, OR give me a call, and I'll help you out.

With a "little luck," we should get another ride in tomorrow - the Team Manager (Hayden) has an "off road" area near a local dam in mind. I can envisage "dirt and mud" tomorrow, but it'll be fun.

The obligatory "cheesy" photo of Hayden during today's pedal - in Brighton, TAS.

Well, that's the first week "done and dusted."

Donations are coming in - thanks to everyone who's donated already. Awesome job.

Tomorrow will hopefully be a $1.6M day for the GCC - thanks to the major sponsors who will "match" online donations up to $800K. Incredible effort.

So far, both the bicycle and the rider are holding up quite well - the odd squeak and thump is noted during my rides (funny thing - that's me!)

Encountered other GCC riders in the area - the jersey is easily spotted. Lots of waving and words of encouragement are exchanged, as the bicycles cruise by.

Lots of questions from people about the event when you stop for a break OR waiting for an Uber to get up that one last hill (only joking).

Be transitioning to Tasmania, very shortly to get some rides in with the Team HJK manager, my grandson Hayden - looking forward to it.

My eldest son, Steven has joined Team HJK - so planning is underway for 2025.

Team "Gen3" will make it's debut.

Me just supporting the local community - lending a hand to one of my sponsors.

    Stay safe.

That's the first ride completed - mainly to make sure the adjustments I made to the bike were good (only a very minor touch-up required to the handlebars - quite an important part of the bike. Lol!).

I felt good & the bike ran smoothly. However, there was one "clicking" sound, which could've been either the bike or my knee - I put some oil on the bike, so we'll see.

For those who have supported me already and to those that will support this cause - thank you. You're the ones who are

making a difference in children's lives - give yourself a "pat on the back".

    Stay safe.
